Volunteer

Each year, we help hundreds of New Yorkers to build full and happy lives. We offer volunteer opportunities and hands-on experiences for people who give their time and effort to support our mission. Our volunteer projects are available in the Bronx, Westchester, Manhattan, and Queens, with projects that take place both in the community and within Special Citizen’s program facilities. Available volunteering opportunities are listed below:

Individual or Group Volunteering Opportunities

Most volunteer opportunities are hands-on and will be tailored to your expertise and interests. We will provide the necessary training and supervision necessary, to make your experience meaningful and rewarding, as you work directly with people who participate in Special Citizens’ programs. Volunteers can help people by assisting with different sports activities, yoga, fitness, cooking, arts, drama, photography, creative writing and any special area of interest that you might want to share with others. If you are looking for a hands-on experience with a non-profit human services organization, we want to hear from you! We welcome student volunteers, corporate volunteers, and anyone who has the desire to give back to the community.

Art of Autism Volunteers Connections

Volunteers are part of arts workshop and are paired with adults supported by Special Citizens to create all types of art projects. These workshops allow people to express themselves creatively, which help them to realize new strengths and develop a greater sense of dignity and independence.

Supported Employment & Mentoring

Help people supported by Special Citizens with resume and cover letter writing, email correspondence, and follow up with potential employers after an interview. Work one-on-one to help people supported by Special Citizens gain confidence and sharpen their employment interview skills by providing them with mock interviews and feedback.

Young Professionals Committee

The Young Professionals Committee (YPC) is a group of young professionals with an interest in socializing, networking, volunteering, and fundraising for Special Citizens’ mission of supporting people with Autism and the vision of creating a world of autism acceptance. We will have social events for networking and to bring new people into the fold and are planning some great volunteer activities across New York City. Throughout the year we will host several events such as volunteer days, film screenings, and happy hours that boost awareness of Special Citizens’ work and autism in general. To get involved, email alexandra.stcharles@specialcitizens.org.
