THE SIBLINGS MANIFESTO
By virtue of the fact that I have a handicapped sibling, I am different.
In a world that cares little for the fate of the handicapped, I care.
In an era when most refuse to look, I see you.
At a time when many refuse to listen, I hear you.
I hereby make a decision to improve the “quality of life” for my own sibling and the many disabled brothers and sisters of other people.
I will be an advocate on behalf of handicapped individuals.
I will work on projects designed to improve their lifestyles and the lifestyles of their families.
I will not do it just for my brother or sister, I will do this in the interest of other human beings.
I will familiarize myself with different disabilities, problems and concerns, and will work with siblings like myself toward achieving mutual goals.
I also have an obligation to myself, to live a life independent from my handicapped sibling. I deserve every chance for as full a future as can be availed and my sibling is entitled to the same opportunity.
I have an interest in siblings who are in circumstances similar to mine; therefore, I will reach out to them in times of need or merely for friendship, and I will expect other brothers and sisters of the disabled to do the same for me.
SOCIETY CAN IGNORE US ONLY IF WE LET THEM –
THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF AMERICA’S
DISABLED CITIZENS WON’T LET THAT HAPPEN!
