All residential programs are prepared for the needs of individuals based on abilities and choices. We find it is totally appropriate to meet the needs of each person exactly where they are at. While autism shares similar symptoms, each person is different and requires specific attention in goal setting and recreation. This means that everyone should be involved in things the consumers can adjust to. This enables them to integrate socialization to their activities. Individualized planning is a necessity. Computer training is also used as an enjoyed activity in programs and residences. It is not so difficult when we involve socialization which is very necessary even though difficult. Individualized program planning is a necessity.
In-Home and Day Habilitation programs are designed in exactly the same way although challenging the end results that occur are rewarding.
The Value Plus Shop provides task skills in many areas. For example: hand sewing, quilting and even machine sewing. It also is involved in learning about retail skills. The consumers have learned to prepare items for sale, steam clothing, ticket and tag and do inventory. Some also have learned to greet customers and use the cash register. Great progress is noted in many of the consumers.
Munch Center, which is a Work Readiness program, teaches similar tasks and introduces consumers to the world of work. Consumers are learning to write resumes and learn how to interview for jobs. While this is difficult for most of the consumers, as their basic handicap includes lack of socialization, communication difficulties in general, it is a good format for teaching. Hopefully, some will become routinized in the process and may be able to use this ability for employment. We also have a computer program where consumers learn basics and even progress to learning how to do data collection.
The In-Home program helps individual children and adults reinforce all sorts of skills like hygiene, grooming and also helps to teach new skills and community awareness among other necessary social awareness.
Day-Habilitation fills in ongoing education and training for those consumers who have aged out of school programs. This program reinforces every skill needed on an individual basis and reaching the people in specific areas to help them continue skills they have gained and to develop new ones. These people are also learning through the use of computers.
We also have a Case Management program which enables parents and consumers who have been not yet been able to access the system. Our Case Managers will provide detailed information on how to achieve services for disabled children and adults. For such assistance, parents and professionals may contact Case Management at 718-601-6935.
PRAISE FOR OUR GROUP HOME STAFF
Special Citizens wishes to thank our super staff, some of whom have been with us for over twenty years. This includes our Managers who are a class act and Supervisors who go above and beyond. For those who have been with us a very long time thank you for your devotion and everything you have given to the consumers. Some of you have been with us ten to over twenty years which we believe is quite a record. As the backbone of our program you have earned our respect and affection. Because of you the consumers have enjoyed consistency and real caring. This makes a big difference in giving everyone support knowing they are surrounded by people who understand and nurture them. We proudly thank all of you for everything you have done and continue to do for the consumers and the agency.
