New Copy Center Serves Midtown East,
Helps Autistic Young Adults Make Their Way in the World

NEW YORK, January 10 - A new, state-of-the-art copying and desktop publishing facility, employing autistic young adults under professional supervision, has opened in the Midtown East neighborhood.

WOWY (for "Wonder of Wonders, Yes!"), at 352 E. 55th Street, offers fast, high quality copying - in bulk or small orders - at popular prices. But just as important, customers have the satisfaction of knowing that the business they bring to WOWY is helping young people with special needs earn a paycheck and a sense of self-worth.

WOWY is an initiative of Special Citizens Futures, Unlimited, Inc., which is dedicated to serving autistic citizens throughout life. Gerri Zatlow, Executive Director of Special Citizens, notes that while considerable attention and funding have been devoted to needed research on autism, there are thousands of young people living with autism who have been cared for through childhood by loving parents - parents who unfortunately won't always be around. "We have to find ways of giving these wonderful young people the tools to make their way in the world - with our help, certainly, but under their own power."

The copy and publishing capabilities of WOWY will also be put to work reproducing original art, which has been created by autistic young people and is displayed in a gallery adjoining WOWY. Prints and greeting cards reflecting the imaginative power and technical skill of these artists will be on sale in the WOWY gallery and in retail outlets throughout the Midtown East neighborhood.
