Autism Info > An Overview
The condition of autism has exploded into what many call an epidemic. Staggering reports of increases in the disability have emerged in specific areas in New York as well as throughout the United States. Scientific research is abundant, and it is likely that there are multiple causes. Experienced researchers suspect genetics, neurological and environmental factors.
New therapies continuously emerge which may or may not be acceptable or useful. Among the better treatments are early intervention to stimulate autistic toddlers, and speech therapy which may increase language, eye contact and response.
Professionals have gained knowledge of autism. The public is informed through TV, magazines and newspapers. One problem is that most information is geared toward autism in children and not enough toward adults. The disability of autism is not outgrown. Parents have to be aware that existing services also end when their children reach age twenty-one.
Disability knows no race, creed or socio-economic distinction. The Autism Spectrum Disorder covers a wide range of functioning from classic autism to Asperger’s Syndrome where there are no significant delays in language. However, all individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder suffer communication difficulties, social impairment, some limited comprehension, and often poor judgment. Autism is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and is identified within the first three years of life. Autism is not a mental illness nor is it caused by psychological factors.
