Founder's Message
Recognizing the fact that ongoing programs for the autistic over age 21 did not exist, a group of parents came together in 1976 and incorporated Special Citizens. Struggle and indifference toward our children increased our conviction and purpose. We would not become victims, but advocates for the future.
In our investigation it was soon learned that advocacy would not be enough. Time was quickly passing. We then amended our corporate papers to become providers of service. This was a difficult journey, but there have been many rewards.
Our history as recorded is on our website (“About Us”). Since my son Douglas’ entrance into the DeClemente Group Home, I have been able to witness a full and meaningful life for him. Today, twenty years later, Douglas has a complete, happy and good life with most of his needs met, and a loving and caring staff. He has grown and developed and earned a great deal of personal independence which he enjoys.
To parents, families and professionals: If you wish to achieve a similar end for your children you must unite and fight as hard as you can. Without a lot of hard work, there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
The enormous increase in the numbers of autistic people is something to be addressed NOW. As the need grows, fewer and fewer opportunities are available. If we do not succeed your children will have no place, no time and no future. We have no crystal ball for an answer and success in this endeavor depends on you. We have to face the fact that unless we yell loud and strong no one will hear us. My efforts and that of my family took a tremendous toll on all of us but the means have definitely justified the end. You must join together and do the same.
